A wonderful farmstead house of Hendrik van Gilse van der Pals is one of the unique monuments of the modernist style period in the city. Behind a magnificent main facade of the building in the modernized style of Italian Renaissance with baroque elements one can see a household yard made in the form of a rural Dutch farm. A brick arch with a wooden framework edged with a strip of white glazed brick leads into the yard. Household constructions are in the modernist style and according to the Dutch tradition are made of red brick.
The most fascinating is an octahedral framework turret pigeon-loft covered with green glazed tiles (these turrets in Holland were made to show that the owner of the farm is a nobleman and has the right to keep his own carrier pigeons).
Another wall with a smaller arch separates the household yard and the garden in front of the eastern facade of the house, where the owners of the house could go down by the rounded ladder from the glassed verandah, the stone basement of which is cut through by the semicircular apertures covered with a nice lattice. According to Dutch tradition cartouches with the owner’s arms are in the corners. Such a yard should have reminded to the place’s owner of his native land which he had left as an eighteen-year old orphan. Dutchman van der Pals advanced well in his professional life in Petersburg. Having begun in 1874 as an employee of L. Neuscheller company, which belonged to the stepfather of his friend and a schoolmate at the Institute for Youth in Kapstadt (where they studied commerce) Max Otmar Neuscheller, within ten years he was promoted the owner’s partner. To the beginning of XX century van der Pals was already the business director of both rubber manufactory “Treygolnik” ("Triangle") and factory "Skorokhod” (“Fast walker"), as well as he was assigned councillor of St.-Petersburg discount and loan bank, the director of the First Russian insurance society, etc. He is also known for his charity activities – he was the trustee of the School for Children of Foreign Confessions, orphan homes, tubercular sanatoria, etc.
