“The Garin Death Ray” (The Hyperboloid of Engineer Garin”), is a famous novel by Alexey Tolstoy. A nd there was a real person who was used as a model for Garin.
According to some sources, the scientist, who was made immortal by Tolstoy, lived, worked, and died on 37 Zhukovskogo Street. Hyperboloid was invented more than twenty years before the novel was written. The inventor was the scientist Mikhail Mikhaylovich Filippov, who defended his PhD thesis in Heidelberg University.
The instrument, constructed by him, allowed making distance explosions with help of a ray (invented by him, too).
But the tragedy happened at night of 11-12 of June, 1903. Filippov was going to fulfill the finishing series of experiments in his laboratory. He asked not to disturb him until the morning. But next morning he was found dead with the open window in his laboratory. The most surprising point is that the same night the house seen from his apartment was exploded on the unknown reason. The cook and the caretaker have died there. The police and the guard service agents came to the apartment. They took all the documents and instruments of a dead during the search. Medical experts failed in recognizing the death reason. One of them said that Filippov’s death reason was a heart attack, and another one mentioned the poisoning with the ammonocarbonous acid fumes.
A physician Polyansky, invited by Filippov’s family as an independent expert, wrote in Latin: «Mors ex causa ignota» («death from the unknown reason»).
The city was filled with gossips and rumors. The newspapers printed ridiculous articles. Filippov’s scientific researches were confiscated and got lost deep in the guard department. Some people say that the papers burnt in the fire in 1917 году. The scientist sympathized with the Revolution ideas, so his death could be not an accident during the experiment.

Валерий, (29.04.2011 at 00:37) 2— Классно!
