[description] => If you head the “western spit of Yelagin island where the locals often enjoy northern sunsets' incredible beauty” © you’ll see the two lions. Their silhouettes are pretty picturesque, especially on the sky or the gulf background. Next to the lions you can descend the narrow stairs right to the water. Usually, these places are occupied by the lovers, and fatty ducks and ducklings waddling around and begging for food. The lions were made from the local Pudost stone by an unknown author at the end of 18th century. It’s not known for sure who ordered and made them.
There’s a version that this lion couple was created by A.Voronikhin for A. Stroganov’s summer house. Another version tells that these statues originally were decorating the entrance to the Maryino mansion, and only after that were moved to Stoganov’s summer house, where they were standing at the side phasade till 20th century. In 1920s there were similar lions at Putilovsky Factory. Perhaps, it was them.
In 1927 the city authorities were renovating the spit after the serious flood, and the lions got their new place. In 1994 they were reconstructed along with the Kitchen complex sculptures.
The strong, well-built lions are facing each other, and we can say they are a great decoration for Yelagin island spit.

[comment] => попалась на глаза эта тема. Только мне, коллеги, так показалось? Львы-то, согласно предложенному тексту ,может, и украшают стрелку, а сама стрелка умерла... Не побоюсь даже этого слова- надругались над стрелкой кто как мог. Слева громадина стадиона, справа убогие гвозди высоток- прямо на голову лезут, такое впечатление. Далее справа по курсу какой-то круглый баул... Умерла Стрелка! Убили красоту...
