On the 13 (25) of July, 1826 in the eastern rampart of the crownwork of the fortress were executed five Decembrists, who gathered on the 14 (26) of December, 1825 the troops on the Senate Square. Their memory was immortalized in street names. In St. Petersburg you can meet the heroes’ names in Decembrists street, Pestel street, Ryleeva street, and Kahovskogo lane. On the day of the 150th anniversary of the Revolt on the site of the execution was set a 9-meter granite obelisk (sculptors A. Ignatiev and A. Dema).

Bas-reliefs are set on the obelisk. This image of five executed Decembrists was first published by Herzen in his Polar Star literary miscellany (which was published in London).
