There are lots of places related to Mikhail Lomonosov on Vasilevsky Island. One of them is situated here in the yard of school 32. However, it’s not that easy to recognise it since the old brick wall is all covered with graffiti. Besides, several years ago a discussion was held about that the remained base of the laboratory should get a monument status.
It was not easy to Michael Vasilevich to get this laboratory - he submitted (from 1741) for several times the papers which showed that a scientific base was required for researches. Only 7 years later the laboratory was opened. Since Lomonosov lived in the neighbouring house, he spent all the time in the laboratory. In 1757 Michael Vasilevich ceded the laboratory to the chemist Salkhow.
To the two-hundredth anniversary of the first scientific chemical laboratory in Russia (1748 ~ 1948) M.A.BEZBORODOV's work, where the laboratory was described, has been published:
"... The Laboratory was a one-storeyed brick building with a double-pitch roof covered with tiles. Two pipes towered over the roof; one of them was for ventilation and fume removal of the laboratory furnaces, the other one was for fume removal of the heating stove. The building consisted of a vaulted big room where there were laboratory furnaces, and two small rooms which Lomonosov used to call the chambers. One of the chambers intended «for weighing and division of the substances », the other one was «for ware, which is not always in the use». The attic was to store the equipment and chemical ware..."
Unfortunately, now we can see all this only on the photos...

Считать себя экспертом по этому вопросу не берусь. Но по изученным мною свидетельствам и сопоставлению дат выходит, что здесь велись ПЕРВЫЕ ЭКСПЕРИМЕТЫ по получению смальты. Возможно, малые работы созданы именно здесь. Например, известно, что мозаичный Портрет Петра I датируется 1754 годом, а в Боновом доме. Ломоносов прожил до сентября 1757 г. Но с 1748 по 1757 годы основные исследования проводились именно в первой русской химической лаборатории,

«…Неукротимая энергия учёного, решительность, способствовали тому, что его чаяниям суждено было сбыться: в специальной пристройке к его дому на Васильевском острове открывается мастерская для набора мозаичных картин, и в ней он начинает занятия с первыми своими учениками — художниками-мозаичистами Матвеем Васильевичем Васильевым и Ефимом Тихоновичем Мельниковым. А сам М. В. Ломоносов был первым в России человеком, который начал на собственном опыте и своими руками осваивать технику мозаичного набора…»
