Most people, after visiting Makarova street in Kronstadt, usually take photos at the memorial plaque of the Peter’s Dock. Tourists can see only a small part of the building, which was really new step in the development of construction. Even now it is admired, besides currently it is in a poor state.

After the end of the Great Northern War the Russian Navy was developing. The maritime fortress Kronshlot required a dry dock to repair the underwater part of ships. Peter the Great studied docks in England and Holland and made a project upon which the dock was constructed. It was very advanced because the dock was to be drained not with the pump but by gravity flow. The construction began in 1719. By 1722 the drainage channel was mostly finished, nevertheless the dock itself was finished much later and was opened only on the 30th of July, 1752. It took only 24 hours to drain the dock. 

The dock length is about 1.5 miles. 10 large vessels could be repaired there at the same time. Unfortunately now all this is history.

How to reach: either from Chernaya Rechka (Black River) or from Staraya Derevnya (Old Village) metro stations by buses/minibuses to Kronstadt, then walk.
