Informal are these sphinxes or not, the sightseeing tours usually do not get as far as the Egyptian Bridge (besides, one of the most well-known in Saint-Petersburg).
The bridge goes over Fontanka River, linking parts of Lermontovsky prospect. Why did they build such a beautiful bridge so far away from the main tourist part of St. Petersburg? There is no clear answer, but there is a version that nearby there are army barracks. Probably the government tried to develop in the army the imperial patriotism and reverence. But why the Egyptian theme was chosen is anyway still a question.
The bridge was built in 1825-1826 (engineers: W. von Tretter and V. A. Khristianovich). A well-known story about the collapse of the Egyptian Bridge in 1905 is usually told to the tourists and on the school lessons of physics. This happened because of the resonance, caused by a squadron of cavalry guard and 11 sledges. After that a temporary wooden bridge was built. And the modern version of the bridge was built in 1954-1956 on the project of engineer Vladimir Demchenko and architects P. A. Areshev and V. S. Vasilkovsky.



On the banks of Fontanka River, at the beginning of the bridge, on both sides of the bridge there are two sphinxes, lying on granite pedestals (sculptor P. P. Sokolov). Renovated in 2004, they watch the life of residents and visitors of the City on Neva, even more wonderful and majestic than ever.
