The Monument to the Defenders of Leningrad Sky in Sosnovka Park
City: Saint-Petersburg.
This monument is not visible from the city's avenues. It is hidden in the trees of the park Sosnovka. The Monument to The Defenders of Leningrad Sky was set in a park’s alley in 1978. The monument creators are: architects V. Vinogradov and L. V. Matveev and engineer B. Z. Wilner. The monument was erected on the place of a former airfield Sosnovka. Even before the war in this area there was a park of Osoaviakhim. In September 1941, the construction of the airfield began here. Mobilized girls took place in the construction. The airfield was finished in December 1941 and in the very beginning of 1942 it received first cargo planes. In 1942-1944 the airport was the base of the150th Fighter Regiment. In 1943 the 34th Bomber Air Regiment based here. Not far from the Sosnovka airfield’s take-off runway during the war there was a military cemetery where were buried the dead pilots and gunners.

How to reach: bus number 93 from Academicheskaya metro station, also lots of transport from Ploshad Muzhestva metro station.
